STONE – SHAPES OUR LANDSCAPE

Stone has an ancient human significance from spiritual to commercial, from conflict and suffering to peace offerings and also has a direct influence on our modern landscape. Northern Scotland is blessed with a wide variety of rock types, with some of the oldest stone in the world, Lewisian Gneiss (around 2.5 billion years old), and much younger rocks such as the Moine schists and Caithness flagstone.

The elemental processes that are involved in eroding seemingly dense solid rock are no more evident than along our coastlines. Witness the immense power of the sea during a winter storm as enormous waves crash into cliffs and exposed shorelines, moving huge boulders and rounding them off!  On a smaller scale, this is the same process that produces the smooth rounded stones on our beaches and shorelines where we find the beautiful naturally polished cobbles and pebbles that we use in our designs and features.

Imagine the epic journey of the stone, sometimes moved from mountain to shore by long gone glaciers and imagine the timescale involved from rock formation to feature in your room!

  Beach Stone Clocks

In places along our local shoreline, the Moine rocks have weathered through old bedding planes producing thin slabs which we can use for our clock designs, pendulums and features. The beach slate is mostly collected on Ullapool or nearby Isle Martin beaches.

The slate was used for roofing and later re-used as ballast for the old commercial boats and dumped overboard (jetsam) when not required. Wave action rounds off the sharp edges to give the interesting shapes and colours of our designs.  The small gold coloured inclusions in the slate is iron pyrites, also known as ‘fool’s gold’.

  Small Sculptures

We offer small practical stone designs that are useful in the bathroom and kitchen such as egg cups, soap dishes and switch/light pulls. Our smaller stone stacks and ‘heartstones’ are a lovely feature in any room.

  Gaia Stones

All our stones have been carefully selected for their purpose and we have left them as natural as when we discovered them on our shorelines. We may sometimes lightly oil or wax a stone to enhance its natural lines, highlight its individual crystals or grains and saturate its colours. The smoothness of the stone is completely natural; we do not tumble our stones. When you purchase a stone from us, we will include its provenance; rock type, its approximate age and from where it came.

Feely Stones – Palm Stones – Grounding Stones

These are stones that have a distinctive energy and may be used for their therapeutic effect. The particular energy given off by a stone is determined by its internal crystalline structure, and by the atomic vibrations that are specific to that structure.  Certain stones vibrate in a way that resonates with and affect particular energies inside each person.

Among the assumed benefits are that they ease anxiety and have a calming influence; theyhelp release troublesome thoughts and transform negative energy; they dispel stress and provide balance within stressful situations; they encourage logical thought processes and enable clarity of thought.

Although they are normally gemstones, crystals or minerals, every stone has its own subtle energy and we encourage you to use one of our selected stones, such as the ancient Lewisian gneiss (which contains much quartz) and connect with its energy. Hold a stone in your clasped hand; feel its texture, its temperature, its character, its nuances, turn it, feel it change; centre and connect with the stone.

Keepsakes

Purchase a Gaia Stone as a memento of your Highland shorelines and landscapes.

Massage Stones

Hot Stone Massage is a style of massage therapy using water-treated stones and crystals as healing tools. They are placed at specific sites on the body to promote relaxation and to help open up energy pathways. Muscles are pre-treated with the heated stones to allow the therapist to more easily perform deep tissue manipulations. Cool stones are sometimes used alternately with hot stones and oils are usually incorporated into the massage treatment.

Sauna Stones – Sweat Lodge Stones

Use our stones as a set of interesting natural features at the top of a hot stone stack for your sauna or sweat lodge. We suggest that you do not have our stones near the hottest area of your heat source.
